Here are some strategies to find relief in the meantime:

  1. Close Your Blinds and Drapes: Doing this will help to exclude sunlight and keep it out of your home. So, be sure to close all your blinds, drapes, and any sort of window treatments. Remember to close all windows, too; a cross-breeze in the daytime does little to keep the warm air out.
  1. Adjust Your Ceiling Fans to Counter-Clockwise: Typically, ceiling fans are set to a clockwise rotation, pushing air downwards to enhance the cooling effect when your AC is operational. However, if your AC is not functioning right now, you can switch your ceiling fans to the counter-clockwise setting. This adjustment will pull up cool air and distribute it throughout the room, making the environment more comfortable without a working air conditioner. If you are unsure of the switch’s location, it is usually found on the base of the ceiling fan to change the blade direction.
  1. Limit Opening Exterior Doors: To minimize the entry of warm air, keep front, back, basement and garage doors closed as much as possible. This will help retain the cool air inside your home while preventing the unwanted warm air from entering.
  1. Open Windows at Night: The evening temperature drop can effectively cool your home. Therefore, consider opening your windows in the evening to aid in cooling. Remember to close them again in the morning.
  1. Minimize Use of Heat-Inducing Appliances: It is important to note that appliances such as stoves, dryers, and dishwashers can increase your home’s temperature. Therefore, it is advisable to limit their use, if possible, while waiting for your AC to be repaired.
  1. DIY Temporary AC: This final tip is somewhat unconventional, but when creativity intersects with innovation, results follow. You can create a makeshift air conditioner by placing a large bowl of ice in front of an electric fan. The fan will blow air over the ice, cooling it as it passes. You can relax in front of this improvised cooling solution while we handle the work to restore your AC system.
